The physics Why snow weighs so much more than it looks
Snow's weight comes down to a single thing: how much water is packed inside it. Fresh powder is mostly air, so it's light. But as snow settles, gets rained on, or partly melts and refreezes, the air squeezes out and water takes its place — and water is heavy.
That's why the same depth of snow can weigh four or five times more depending on its condition. Here's what one square metre of 30 cm-deep snow weighs, by type:
Multiply that by the surface of a whole roof and the numbers climb fast. A March snow can put five times the load of the same-looking January snowfall — which is exactly why the risk sneaks up on people late in the season.
When it matters When roof snow actually becomes a problem
For most modern, well-built roofs, collapse is genuinely rare — building codes in snowy regions require roofs to be built for their local snow load. The everyday problems show up long before weight is ever a structural concern:
- Ice dams. Heat escaping through the roof melts the underside of the snow. The water trickles down to the cold eaves, refreezes, and backs up under your shingles — where it can leak straight into the house.
- Uneven loads. Wind piles snow deep on one side or in roof valleys, concentrating weight in the spots least able to handle it.
- Thaw and rain. Snow soaks up rain like a sponge. A mild, wet spell can nearly double the weight overnight without adding a single centimetre of depth.
- Lower-margin structures. Flat roofs, older buildings, big open spans, porches and additions have less room to spare than a standard pitched roof.
Rule of thumb: keep an eye on it once wet snow gets deep, whenever ice starts forming along the eaves, and especially in the days before a warm-up or rain — that's when a manageable load turns into a heavy one.

The most dangerous way to deal with roof snow is to climb onto an icy roof. Falls from roofs and ladders send people to hospital every winter, and a snow-covered slope is exactly the wrong place to find your footing.
